In November 2023, a deeply disturbing incident unfolded on Bonnie
Court in the heart of the New Hempstead frum community. What began as
a routine medical call quickly escalated into a violent altercation,
leaving multiple individuals injured and one person stabbed. Ramapo
Police, Rockland Paramedics, and Spring Hill Ambulance responded
swiftly, with over a dozen EMS volunteers rushing to the scene. In
total, five ambulances were deployed to care for and transport the
wounded.

The violence was shocking. But what makes this even more alarming is
where it happened.

This home is not in a place you would expect it to be. It sits just a
five-minute walk from a local Shul and literally right next to multiple homes of
frum families that moved in well before this home was purchased in
December 2022. Indeed, this home is centrally located, and many Shul
members walk past this home on their way to and from shul.

And yet, this is the very home that was listed at $699,000 and
purchased for $765,000, an excessive and unusual overpayment at the
time, and an amount unjustifiably above asking price. The buyer?

This is not an isolated case. We are seeing a pattern of homes being
purchased with significant overbids, not to strengthen the kehilla,
but to strategically insert rental occupants into established Yiddishe
neighborhoods, with zero regard for the fabric or values of those
communities. It is increasingly deliberate. And dangerous to our
physical and spiritual welfare.

This stabbing didn’t happen in a vacuum. It happened in a house that
regularly has 6 cars in its driveway because New Square landlords
allegedly prefer looking for people that are willing to rent out
houses by the room and overcrowd the house. This attracts specific
elements of society and causes clear stress within their living
conditions. It now stands as a painful symbol of what’s at stake when
our communities are treated this way.

When reckless property acquisitions lead to real harm, whether
physical, emotional, communal, there must be accountability.

Our neighborhoods are not for sale. Our families are not disposable.
And our voices will not be silent.
